Physiotherapy

Background and History:

In ancient, Greece Orca 460 Bs. Hector practiced  a physiotherapy  technique called hydro therapy which is Greek for water treatment, now evolved and adapted specifically to various patient conditions.

In 1994, the UK recognized physiotherapy as a specialized branch of nursing, regulated a chartered society. In succeeding two decides, formal physiotherapy programs were established. In other country including New Zealand (1913) and the USA (1914).

The first record of American physiotherapy was at walter  reed college and hospital at portland, Oregon where nurses with physical reconstruction aids, contributed  ….. of to the  recovery and rehabilitation of many WWL vets.

In 1921, mary MC Millan formed the physical therapy Association in USA subs equvently renamed the ADTA, this organization profoundly influenced development of physiotherapy in America.

Physiotherapy started 45 years back in Nepal with some of the health professional  selling need of physiotherapy for patients, few nurses in Government hospital were provided with physiotherapy training who continued their   job as therapist for a long span at time.

Need at physiotherapy gradually increased among medical parishioners. Later   certificated level in physiotherapy (CPT) was started by inpatient in institute of medicine (IOM) in 1983 AD. IOM produced few batenes at CPT and at begging at 1990s the course  was stoped. with same aim, CDT course was again started by Dhulikhel Medical  Institute (DMI) at Kathmandu Univeristy in 2003 AD. Which has produced almost 180 CPT graduates till date with the upgrading at the qualification in physiotherapy world wide, KV has upgraded CPT course to Bachelor at physiotherapy (BDP) in June 2010, and stopped the CPT course.

In mean while, huge scape at physiotherapy aborad, alot of Nepali students went to India and other countries to BDP Number of physiotherapy graduates drastically  increased in recent past from 2007 to 2012 from 30 to 500 respectively.

Introduction and Activities of PT Department at KCH :

KantiChildrenHospital was initially started as a 50 bedded general hospital in the outskirts of Kathmandu as sort of sanatorium managed by Russian doctors and one of their prestigious unit was the physiotherapy with its Russian staff and equipment. When the hospital was converted into a children’s hospital, the equipment was still kept but used for adults.

Physiotherapy unit is located in a very accessible group floor of the hospital in the left side of the main stairs leading to the medical and paying ward.

Activities of the unit

The physiotherapy department has two physiotherapist and one assistance  physiotherapist. The duty  starts from 8:00 to 2:00 PM. They spent the first half of the duty attending to the  OPD and second half with the inpatient.

Types of refereed  cases its  physiotherapy department :

  1. Cerebral palsy
  2. Delayed milestone
  3. Mental Retardation
  4. Down’s Syndrom
  5. Gvillian Barre Syndrom
  6. Sterrio cleidomastaid tumour (for + i c….)
  7. Congenital hemiplegia
  8. Erb’s palsy and Bell’s palsy
  9. Post TBM sequelae
  10. Muscular dystrophy
  11. Respiratory diseases.

Inpatient care is the NICU, PICU, SICU, NMICU, Burn unit, Medical, Surgical, Cardiology, Oncology and Special cabin. Another component at services provided  is counseling the parents on various conditions of the children.

The  physiotherapy unit is the one of the fundamental units from the start of the hospital and will be providing vital service to the patients and also is a source of income generation to the hospital. so it need more staffs to upgrade its services and be prepared to be part of the institute of child health.
