Kanti children’s hospital is the only referral level government children’s Hospital of Nepal. The hospital is administered and regulated by the Kanti children’s hospital development board, under the Ministry of Health and Population.
The hospital was established in 1963 with the support from the then USSR government as a general hospital with 50 beds. With the addition of 100 beds in 1970 by Nepal government, it turned into 150 bedded hospitals which today have a capacity of 320 beds. The hospital treats children up to the age of 14 from all over the country.
In course of its progress, pediatric surgery was started in 1974 along with 2(two) bedded intensive care unit. With the initiation from the former late Japanese Prime Minister Hriotaro Hashimoto and the support from JICA in 1986, further expansion of other services was possible with Japanese Grant Aid. That expansion included the pathology service, radiology service, burn service along with 6 bedded NICU, 4 bedded PICU and 4 bedded SICU. Again in 1995 with the similar help from the Japanese side 100 beds were added. In order to develop as a central hospital 50 more beds were added in 2002 to start oncology, cardiology and Neonatal intermediate care services. In between 2002-2009, new hospital building with 200 beds was constructed with the help of Ministry of health, Nepal Government.
Today Kanti is running 320 beds in a full swing. Among them 50 percentage includes general pediatric beds with care for severe acute malnutrition. Others are surgical, ICU, Burn, Oncology, Cardiology, Nephrology and neonatology. We have also started super specialty clinics in different field like neurology, endocrinology, asthma and pediatric urology. The social service unit operated by Nepal government has helped to treat the poor and needy patients coming from different part of the country.
Kanti Children’s Hospital is affiliated with National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) for post graduate training in Pediatrics, Radiology Surgery and Anesthesia. We also provide training for paramedics, BN and BSc Nursing. Medical Students from various parts of world come for Elective courses to this Hospital.
We have International collaboration with Alder hey Children’s Hospital Liverpool UK and Hauckland University Hospital Norway for bilateral training, education and research.
Plan is expand total beds to 500 with central ICU, ENT and orthopedic services. Proposal for dermatology and Child psychiatry departments is under process. We have also planned for superspeciality courses like DM neonatology, DM Paediatric hemato-oncology and Mch paediatric surgery. We shall have a new oxygen plant this year hopefully.
We hope Kanti childrens hospital is developed as an Institute of Child Health so that we will be capable of producing expert human resources in the field of pediatric to treat the children of our country.
